If you’ve just set up a business, a free account is an obvious place to start. It keeps your outgoings lean while you figure out how the money actually moves. But ‘free’ doesn’t always mean free, and UK business owners can be caught out by introductory offers that expire or by transaction fees that add up. We’ll explain what ‘free’ actually covers, who these accounts suit, where the costs come and the questions to ask when comparing providers.
What is a free business bank account?
A free business bank account is one with no monthly account subscription fee You still get a sort code, account number, debit card and business banking app. What sits behind the account varies a lot.
Some free accounts come from UK-authorised banks, such as Starling or HSBC. Others come from FCA-authorised e-money digital providers, such as Tide. Both are regulated, but the protection you get if the provider fails is different.
‘Free’ almost always means free from a monthly subscription. Once you start using it, particularly if you’re paying in cash, making international transfers or using an overdraft, fees tend to kick in.
Is a free business bank account actually free?
Not completely, in most cases. The monthly fee is waived, but various types of transactional charges usually remain. The charges worth checking before you apply include:
- Cash deposit fees: Often a percentage of what you pay in, or a flat fee per £100.
- Cheque deposit fees: Where cheques are accepted.
- ATM withdrawal fees: These can mount up if you rely on cash withdrawals regularly
- International payment charges: This may include a markup built into the exchange rate.
- Outgoing Faster Payments or Bacs: These fees often kick in above a monthly allowance.
One real example of this in practice is a UK high street bank that offers 12 months with no monthly fee. However, you are charged for depositing cash and cheques and making international payments. After 12 months, they charge you £8.50 per month.
Digital providers are often more diverse in the way they offer their free accounts. They tend to focus on specific areas to make free, making them appealing to certain businesses if they operate heavily in one type of transaction. The takeaway is simple: ‘free’ is a headline, and the fees page is the real story, so make sure you read it before you sign up.
What ‘free’ and ‘paid’ actually mean for your business account
A free business bank account has no monthly fee. A paid one charges a fixed amount each month. Almost every major UK provider now offers a free option, so the real choice isn’t whether to pay. It’s what each account charges you for the things you do most.
When a monthly fee exists, you’re usually getting one of two things in return. Sometimes it’s lower transaction fees, cheaper cash deposits, free international transfers or more card payments included. Sometimes it’s a wider range of services, like branch access, a named business manager or tools for bigger teams.
The real test isn’t whether an account is free or paid, it’s the fees you’ll actually trigger. Count a normal month for your transfers in and out, card payments, cash deposits and direct debits and match those against each fee schedule. Whichever account charges you least for the things you do most is the one that’s probably cheapest for your business.
Who is a free business bank account best suited to?
Free accounts are offered by most business accounts and are suitable for every business. It depends what business bank account features you need. Some businesses that may find a free account works for them include:
- Newly incorporated limited companies: Businesses that haven’t started trading yet.
- Sole traders and freelancers: Those who mainly invoice digitally and have low transaction volumes.
- Side-hustlers and second-business owners: People who need to keep finances separate without paying twice.
Are free business bank accounts safe? FSCS protection explained
This is the question people search for a lot, and it matters. Being a free business bank account doesn’t have an effect on protection; this is purely based on the type of provider offering the account, which means it can be protected in two different ways.
FSCS protection: The Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) covers eligible deposits held with UK-authorised banks and building societies. The limit rose from £85,000 to £120,000 on 1 December 2025, per legal entity per institution.
FCA safeguarding: This applies to e-money firms and authorised payment institutions, which aren’t banks. Under FCA rules, your money is held separately from the provider’s own funds in accounts at a UK bank. If the provider fails, an administrator returns your money, minus costs. It isn’t the same as FSCS and you could wait longer to get your money back.
What features should a free business bank account include?
As standard or at a minimum, look for:
- A UK sort code and account number: You will need this to receive payments cleanly.
- A Visa or Mastercard debit card: This is accepted online and in-store.
- Faster Payments and Direct Debits: You will likely need this for moving money and collecting regular payments.
- A mobile app with real-time notifications: So you get instant visibility into your credits and debits the moment they happen .
- In-app categorisation: To help you see your income and expenses, ready for tax time.
- Accounting software integration: To link in with FreeAgent, Xero or QuickBooks.
Nice-to-haves include savings pots or interest on balances, multi-user access for your accountant, in-app invoicing and receipt capture. Mettle bundles a FreeAgent subscription at no extra cost. Starling includes its own Business Toolkit add-on for invoicing and tax estimates.
What is the catch with a free business bank account?
Some things to be aware of with ‘free’ business bank accounts include:
- Introductory periods that expire: Some accounts offer fee-free windows ranging from 12 to 24 months before reverting to standard paid structures.
- It’s not all free: Free refers to monthly subscriptions and separate to fees applicable to the activities that the account is used for. Always check you’re not paying too much for how you use it.
- Range of Services: Business accounts that are permanently free of the monthly charge are a key feature (though not exclusively) of the newer providers that came after the traditional banks. Their range of services are streamlined and less broad than a traditional bank, with some specifically created for a niche service. Make sure it’s not missing one of your main needs.
How do I open a free business bank account?
Most free accounts can be opened online in one sitting if you have your documents ready, and you’ll usually need:
- Proof of identity: A UK passport, photocard driving licence or Biometric Residence Permit (BRP).
- Proof of address: A utility bill, council tax bill or bank statement from the last three months.
- Business details: Trading name, nature of work and expected turnover.
- Your UTR (Unique Taxpayer Reference): If HMRC has issued one.
- Companies House number: For limited companies only, as sole traders don’t need one.
Digital providers generally verify you with a selfie and a photo of your ID in-app. High street banks may require more paperwork. Approval can take anywhere from minutes to 3 weeks or more, depending on the provider and business complexity.
A quick note on personal accounts, running business income through a personal current account isn’t illegal, but it’s usually a breach of your bank’s terms and conditions. If the bank identifies business activity on a personal account, it can give you notice to close. Separating your finances also makes completing your Self Assessment tax return much easier. Sole traders are moving to Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA), which went live April 2026 , so clean record-keeping from the start is worth the 10 minutes it takes to open a business account.
Which free business bank accounts are worth considering?
Every free account comes with different features. Rather than pick from a shortlist of brand names, work through the checks below and match each one against how your business actually operates. The account that fits is the one that charges you least for what you do most and protects your money in a way you’re comfortable with. Some questions to consider:
- Free forever or free for a period?
- Who holds your money, and how is it protected?
- Does it take cash, and what does that cost?
- What are the per-transaction fees?
- What about international payments?
- Is there an arranged overdraft?
- Will it sync with your accounting software?
- Can more than one person access the account?
- What’s the support like, and when?
- How fast is account opening?
What do free business bank account brands offer?
Digital-first providers like Starling, Tide and Airwallex offer permanently free accounts with no monthly fee, managed entirely through an app or online portal.
High street names like HSBC, NatWest and RBS tend to offer free introductory periods for new businesses, typically up to two years, before moving to a paid structure.
Newer challengers such as Zempler, WorldFirst and Wallester bring added flexibility, particularly for businesses with international needs or expense management requirements. ANNA Money could appeal to sole traders and startups with its built-in invoicing and tax tools.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a free business bank account with bad credit?
Sometimes, yes. Digital providers run ID verification, fraud checks and anti-money laundering checks. They don’t always run a full credit search for a basic current account. A poor credit history is less likely to block you than an incomplete ID profile. Overdrafts and credit facilities are different and will need a credit check.
Do free business bank accounts include an overdraft?
Some can offer an arranged overdraft to eligible customers, subject to credit checks. Depends on the type of provider and whether they are authorised as a full bank or as an electronic money institution (EMI). Most free digital accounts don’t offer credit at all. If you need a buffer, look at a separate business credit line or a provider that includes one.
How long does a free business bank account stay free?
It depends on the provider. Some accounts have no set end date and remain free on their standard terms for as long as you use them. Others, particularly startup offers, run for an introductory period before switching to a paid fee structure, so it’s worth noting the end date when you open one.
Can a sole trader open a free business bank account?
Yes, many banks and digital providers accept sole traders, and you don’t need a Companies House number. You do need ID, proof of address and ideally your UTR or confirmation you’ve registered with HMRC as self-employed.
