How to Compare Business Bank Accounts
Understand Your Requirements
How you do business will affect the type of account you need. How many transactions will you have each month? Do you need to pay in cash? Do you need a local branch?
Check Eligibility
Most providers have a range of business accounts to suit different types of businesses. Check the eligibility of each account to make sure if suited to your business.
Compare The Latest Deals
There are numerous offers and deals to attract new customers which can be compared with our handy tool above. Always consider the cost of the account once the free period ends.
Why switching is easier than you think
If you are looking at switching, something is not working. It could be the cost, the service or a bit of both. The decision is rarely whether to move; it is whether to move everything, what to do about the credit and historical activity you have built up with your current bank, and how to time it so the operation does not skip a beat.
How does the Current Account Switch Service work for businesses?
The Current Account Switch Service (CASS) is the UK’s automated switching service for business and personal current accounts. Once you have agreed to switch, your new provider transfers your balance, redirects your incoming payments, standing orders, and direct debits, and closes your old account on a date you choose, all within seven working days. It is backed by the Current Account Switch Guarantee, which refunds any charges or interest you incur because of a failure in the switch, and incoming payments sent to the old account are redirected for up to 13 months after the switch date.
CASS is open to businesses with an annual turnover of up to £6.5 million and fewer than 50 employees, as well as charities and trusts within the same thresholds. Above that, the switch has to be done manually: run both accounts in parallel for around 30 days, contact suppliers to update direct debit mandates one by one, and move balances by Faster Payments or CHAPS at the point you are ready to close the old account.
What are the risks of switching business bank accounts?
CASS handles switching business bank accounts well, and the seven-day service has steadily improved since it launched, with the 13-month redirect catching most payments that would otherwise go astray. The potential risks worth understanding are those that lie outside CASS itself.
The first is the loss of your historical activity with your existing bank. Years of account activity, including turnover, payment patterns, average balance, and credit usage, all feed into the internal data the bank uses when you apply for an overdraft, a loan, or invoice finance. A new provider starts from zero. That gap can be the difference between an instant decision and a longer underwriting process, or between an offer and a decline, even when your credit file is the same.
The second is the operational risk during onboarding. Identity and money laundering checks at the new provider can extend opening times, particularly if there is anything unusual about the business or its directors under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017. Funds sitting at the new provider can be temporarily frozen while checks run. The mitigation is simple: do not initiate CASS until the new account is open, fully verified and ready to receive payments. If you are switching after notice to close with your existing bank, talk to them first to confirm whether they will authorise a CASS request from the new provider.
It is worth knowing on the same theme that from 28 April 2026, most UK banks have to give at least 90 days written notice and a written reason before closing a business account, under The Payment Services and Payment Accounts (Contract Termination) (Amendment) Regulations 2025, except in financial crime cases.
When is switching not the right move?
Switching is not always the right answer, and some situations where you might want to consider not moving include:
- You have a loan, overdraft or other credit facility with your current bank and have not understood the implications for that facility
- You are about to apply for a significant credit product where the conduct on your existing account is part of the picture the lender will look at
- You are in the middle of a complex operational period and cannot absorb any disruption to incoming or outgoing payments
Switching does not have to be a clean break, either. Many businesses move part of their activity to a new provider. For example, a multi-currency account for international payments, an EMI account for an expense card programme, or a higher-rate savings account for surplus funds, while keeping their primary banking where it is. That diversifies banking partners, gets the value out of the new provider’s offer and protects the relationship that supports the credit lines you depend on.
Just be sure to add the costs across both accounts before you decide it is cheaper than a full switch.CASS itself always closes the old account as part of a full switch. There is no “soft” partial switch within the service. A partial move means opening a new account separately and manually transferring some activity across, rather than running CASS on part of your banking.
How to switch business bank accounts step by step
The mechanics are straightforward to switch business bank accounts:
- Map the activity: Pull three to six months of statements and note the recurring debits, expected incoming payments, average balance and any seasonal pattern.
- Cost the alternatives: Compare total monthly cost based on your activity, not on the headline fee.
- Read the bonus terms: Conditions usually include a minimum number of active direct debits, a monthly debit card spend, a completion window, or a requirement that no one in the business has held the account before.
- Apply for the new account first: Wait until it is open, fully verified and ready to receive payments.
- Decide on a clean switch or a partial one: If clean, choose the switch date and start CASS at the new provider. If partial, set up the new account in parallel and migrate the chosen activity manually.
- Communicate with partners: Tell anyone who pays you about the new sort code and account number anyway, even with the 13-month redirect.
- Once the switch is complete: Check the first month’s statement against the activity map to confirm nothing has been missed. Your transaction history from the old account does not transfer either. If you need older statements for accounting or a future loan application, request them from your old bank before you close it.
- Re-authorise connected apps: If you use accounting software, a comparison tool or a payment app connected to your old account via Open Banking, that access does not move with you. Cancel it on the old account and set it up again on the new one once the switch is complete.
What switching bonuses are available for business bank accounts?
These are new customer welcome incentives, open to anyone opening an account, not offers reserved for switchers specifically. It is worth noting that switcher-exclusive deals are rare. They usually come with conditions: you cannot have held an account with that provider before, and you often need to use the account in a set way, such as maintaining a minimum number of active direct debits or meeting a monthly card spend threshold.
Some providers offer a fee-free period instead of cash. Check what the fees revert to once that period ends, on both the monthly charge and per-transaction costs. Either way, look past the headline figure to the fee structure behind it. A £200 bonus on an account charging 50p per transaction will be gone within two months if you process 200 transactions a month. Work out the real cost of the account before switching to it.
Which business bank accounts could be best to switch to?
The shortlist depends on what is broken with the current account. If the issue is cost, lean towards permanently free or low-cost digital accounts that price on the activity you actually do. If the issue is service and you bank cash or value branch access, weigh up an account at a bank with a stronger branch footprint or a digital provider with a Post Office cash deposit partnership. If you are switching for features, for example, multi-user permissions, accounting integrations or multi-currency, then narrow down to providers that offer those as standard rather than as add-ons.
Whatever the shortlist, check the provider on the FCA Register and check whether it is a bank covered by FSCS up to £120,000 or an electronic money institution covered by safeguarding rules instead. Both protect customer money, but the routes differ.
Brands That Offer CASS
Look for the CASS logo to see which brands offer the Current Account Switching Service.
Accounts are offered by a mix of fully licensed banks and FCA-authorised electronic money institutions (EMIs). Licensed banks are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per person at each authorised firm. EMIs are not covered by the FSCS but are required by the FCA to safeguard customer funds in line with the Payment Services Regulations.
No Credit Check Business Bank Account FAQs
How hard is it to switch business bank accounts?
Switching UK business bank accounts is usually quick and hassle-free. If you’re eligible for the Current Account Switch Service, your direct debits, standing orders, payments, and balance move to your new account within seven working days, your old account is closed for you, and you’re covered against any charges or lost interest if something goes wrong.
How long does it take to switch a business bank account?
For eligible SMEs (under 50 employees and £6.5m turnover) the CASS process takes seven working days once you choose your switch date, with the new account opened beforehand. Businesses above those thresholds switch manually, which usually takes about a month while both accounts run in parallel. Bank holidays may impact these timelines as they’re based on working days.
Will switching my business bank account affect my credit score?
Applying for the new account often involves a hard search by the new provider, which can affect your credit score for up to six months. If you are applying for several accounts in a short window, expect a small short-term effect from the cluster of hard searches. A full switch, in which your old account is closed as part of the process, can positively affect your score over time.
Can I switch my business bank account if I have an overdraft?
Yes, but the overdraft does not move with you. You will need to clear or refinance the overdraft balance with your current bank, or arrange a new facility with the new provider, before the existing one is closed. If you depend on the overdraft for cashflow, sort the new facility out first so you do not lose the cushion mid-switch.
What happens to my direct debits when I switch?
CASS automatically moves all your active direct debits and standing orders to the new account, and any payments sent to the old account are redirected for up to 13 months. For manual switches above the CASS threshold, you contact each supplier and creditor to update their records and run both accounts in parallel until you are sure nothing is still pointing at the old one.
Can I cancel my switch once I’ve started it?
Yes, up to seven working days before your agreed switch date. To do this, contact your new bank to cancel the switch.
