How to Compare Business Bank Accounts
Understand Your Requirements
How you do business will affect the type of account you need. How many transactions will you have each month? Do you need to pay in cash? Do you need a local branch?
Check Eligibility
Most providers have a range of business accounts to suit different types of businesses. Check the eligibility of each account to make sure if suited to your business.
Compare The Latest Deals
There are numerous offers and deals to attract new customers which can be compared with our handy tool above. Always consider the cost of the account once the free period ends.
Bad credit doesn’t stop access to business accounts
Being turned down for a business bank account because of a poor credit history is more common than most people expect, and it does not have to be the end of the road. Options exist, particularly for businesses without active CCJs or current insolvency proceedings. These tend to, though not exclusively, come from digital-first providers, operating as Electronic Money Institutions (EMI) rather than the high street banks. Knowing where you stand on your credit file before you apply makes the difference between widening the problem and finding a workable account.
Why do banks turn down business bank account applications?
Banks turn down a business account application or the same reasons they turn down any other regulated financial product: the customer falls outside the criteria the provider has set for risk, identity and financial crime. The most common reasons include:
- A County Court Judgement (CCJ) is registered against the business owner or directors
- A previous business insolvency, liquidation or bankruptcy
- A personal or business credit score below the provider’s threshold
- A thin credit file with little payment history to score against
- Lack of stable ID and address.
- Operating in a sector classified as higher risk
- Connections to jurisdictions flagged in the UK’s National Risk Assessment of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing
Before you apply, pull a free credit report. Experian and Equifax both let UK consumers and sole traders access their statutory credit information, and limited companies can check their commercial profile through the agencies’ business products. A run of declined applications shows up as ‘hard searches’ on your file and each one tends to push the score lower, so it is worth knowing what you are working with before you submit anything.
Which businesses face the highest rejection rates?
Some sectors and stages of business attract more conservative underwriting. Hospitality, retail with a heavy cash element, second-hand goods and adult services are routinely treated as higher risk in money laundering risk assessments under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, which means more checks at the application stage and a tighter set of providers willing to take the business on. Construction, money services and some parts of the gig economy sit in a similar bracket.
Newly trading businesses with no filed accounts face a different challenge as there is too little data to score, which leads to caution rather than outright refusal, but the result is often the same. Businesses with directors or shareholders connected to jurisdictions on the UK’s high-risk list also face additional checks before any account is opened.
If your business sits in one of these categories, expect a more detailed application process and have your documentation ready before you start: identity for all directors and beneficial owners, proof of business address, a description of where money will come from and where it will go, and any licences relevant to the sector.
What business bank account options exist for bad credit?
Outside the high street, two product types tend to be more accessible:
Digital-only business current accounts. They still run a credit check but use it for risk-based pricing rather than as a flat decision rule, which means a borderline credit profile is more likely to result in an account with restrictions than a flat refusal.
The other option is the no-credit-check business account offered by electronic money institutions (EMIs). These do not score the application against a credit file, they only conduct soft searches for ID and money laundering purposes. The fee structures on no-credit-check accounts are usually set across the customer base, so a business with poor credit pays the same monthly fee as one with a clean file. That avoids one of the structural problems with bad credit banking, the so-called poverty premium, although a profile with active CCJs or recent insolvency may still fall outside an EMI’s onboarding criteria.
What are the practical limitations of bad credit business accounts?
Digital-only and EMI business accounts often do not have branches, so face-to-face support may be limited. They make up for it in different ways, as many partner with the Post Office network so business customers can pay in cash and cheques at counters across the UK, which covers most cash banking needs without a branch. Customer service tends to be in-app, by phone or by email, and the trade-off keeps fees lower than equivalent high street products.
Some accounts cap the number of free transactions, the amount of cash you can pay in each month or the size of single payments. These limits matter more for a high-volume cash business than for a service business that mostly invoices, so the right product depends on how the business actually moves money.
Can I open a business bank account after insolvency or bankruptcy?
Opening a business account after insolvency or bankruptcy will be very difficult, and the answer depends heavily on where you are in the process. While bankruptcy is in force, banks tend to close existing accounts and most refuse new applications. The law does not prohibit an undischarged bankrupt from operating a bank account, but providers make their own commercial decisions and many will not. Acting as a director of a limited company while undischarged is a criminal offence unless the court grants permission, so the route forward is usually as a sole trader, with the bankruptcy declared in any business communications.
You are usually discharged from bankruptcy after 12 months. Discharge ends most of the restrictions but it does not wipe the record from your credit file, which keeps the bankruptcy marker for six years from the date of the order. Once discharged, no-credit-check accounts are the most realistic option in the early period, with mainstream digital accounts becoming available again as the file rebuilds.
Be prepared to be straightforward about the history at the application stage. EMI providers in particular will normally ask whether you or any director has been bankrupt, subject to a Debt Relief Order or had a company wound up, and they will check public records on the Individual Insolvency Register and at Companies House. Telling the provider upfront tends to result in a faster decision than letting it surface in the checks.
How do I improve my business credit profile over time?
A business credit profile responds to consistent, evidenced behaviour over time. Some ways you can do this include:
- Filing accounts on time at Companies House, where your business is a limited company, is one of the most visible improvements you can make.
- Paying suppliers within agreed terms helps too, since trade payment data is one of the inputs the credit reference agencies use to build the score.
- Settling any outstanding CCJ in full will get the judgement marked as satisfied on the public Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines, and if you settle within one calendar month it can be removed from the register entirely.
- Stable, predictable activity on the business current account itself feeds the score over time.
Avoid running balances close to overdraft limits, clear card balances on schedule and keep credit applications to a minimum while the file recovers.
How do bad credit accounts link with MTD?
If you’ve had credit issues in the past, the last thing you want is an HMRC penalty. Even bad-credit bank accounts now offer direct API feeds to accounting software. By choosing an account with a native integration, you ensure your 2026 MTD filings are automated, proving to future lenders that your business is managed professionally despite any past personal credit setbacks.
Which providers offer bad credit bank accounts?
Zempler Bank is the only fully licensed UK bank in the list, with overdraft availability. The remaining providers are FCA-authorised electronic money institutions: Tide and ANNA Money could suit sole traders and small businesses that want fast setup and built-in bookkeeping tools; Revolut and Airwallex could be stronger fits for businesses handling multiple currencies or cross-border payments; WorldFirst and Equals Money serve similar international use cases with a focus on e-commerce and corporate spend; Wallester specialises in virtual card management for expense control rather than everyday banking; and Counting Up bundles accounting software directly into the account for sole traders who want to avoid a separate bookkeeping subscription.

Can I get a business bank account with a CCJ?
Yes, although the options are narrower. A satisfied CCJ paid within a calendar month can be removed from the public register entirely. An unsatisfied CCJ usually rules out high street accounts, but it does not necessarily rule out digital business current accounts or no-credit-check EMI accounts.
Why was my business bank account application refused?
Reasons vary; they could include a low credit score, a CCJ, a previous insolvency, an incomplete address or trading history, a sector flagged as higher risk or a routine money laundering check that did not pass. Banks are not always required to give a detailed reason for refusing a new application, although new rules from 28 April 2026 require providers to give a written explanation when they close existing accounts.
Is a bad credit business bank account FSCS protected?
Accounts at a UK fully authorised bank or building society is protected by FSCS up to £120,000 per eligible depositor. No-credit-check accounts from electronic money institutions are not FSCS protected, but customer money is ringfenced under EMI safeguarding rules.
