Why ‘no credit check’ opens more choice for businesses
Some business accounts do not run a hard credit search, which will show on your credit file, during the opening process. This makes them a good option for newly trading businesses, sole traders with a thin credit file and founders who want to protect a credit score they have spent time rebuilding. The phrase ‘no credit check’ is doing a lot of work, though. Every UK provider still has to verify your identity, which means a soft search that only you can see. Knowing the difference between what is and is not checked at the application stage can help businesses decide what is the best way forward.
What is a no credit check business bank account?
A ‘no credit check’ business bank account is a UK business account that does not run a hard credit search during the application. It still runs the identity and money laundering checks every UK financial product has to run under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, and a soft search to confirm who you are, but the application is not scored against your credit file. These accounts are mainly offered by FCA-authorised electronic money institutions (EMIs) rather than high street banks. No credit check business accounts offered by EMI’s come without overdrafts or other types of lending based features, though there are some exceptions. The benefit is access to a working business account usually opened in hours or a few days, without a hard search appearing on the business or directors credit file.
What does ‘no credit check’ actually mean for a business bank account?
In this market, ‘no credit check’ means no hard, or otherwise known as, full credit search. A credit search is a look at a person’s or business credit file, held at a Credit Reference Agency, such as Equifax. Hard searches create a visible footprint to other searchers, and stay on your credit file for around 12 months. Each hard search, especially if a few are made in a short space of time, have a negative impact on a credit profile, dragging the score down for several months. No credit check business accounts skip that step, but they still run a soft search, again to a credit reference agency, to confirm your identity, address, along with any markers that could indicate a risk of fraud, links to illegal activity or persons identified as links to crime, terrorism etc. Soft searches are only visible on a personal or business credit file to that person, and have no effect on a score.
Does opening a business bank account affect your credit score?
A no credit check bank account will not affect your credit score, as a soft search is not visible to anyone but you, and your overall score does not take these into account.
This is because a soft search is run for ID and fraud purposes, not to provide any indication of a person or businesses creditworthiness as the account is not providing any form of lending, such as an overdraft. Business accounts that can offer overdrafts, either at application or later, will almost always run a full credit check at the application stage and this will be the case for a majority of high street ‘traditional’ banks and providers with a full bank license authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA).
If you are unsure, just ask the provider what type of search they run before you start the application, although any firm running a full credit check has an obligation to tell you before its run.
What are the trade-offs with a no credit check business account?
If you’re comparing with a high street current account, they’re streamlined versions. Most are provided by Electronic Money Institutions (EMI) and do offer lending products, although there are some exceptions that can offer lending via third party partnerships. Overall though, features that are synonymous with high street banks are not included, think things like cheque books and branches, and run on an online only basis, using apps for the main interface between you and your business account. No credit check business accounts are not designed just for a business with a low credit score, they have been primarily created as a completely revised approach from business accounts offered by banks.
If you want a business account with a bank, you can expect a much longer application process and timeframe, once open, they can be a gateway into an extended set of services and features, such as business lending, mortgages, advice, branches and so on. New and smaller businesses often do not meet the requirements to obtain these accounts until they are established. The flip side for established businesses is not needing such a breadth or type of features that come with the running costs of a traditional bank account.
No credit check business accounts need to be explored and considered for how fit for purpose they are for you and your business model. Each comes with a different focus, for example, some come loaded with accountancy features that save you hours of time or money, while others are for businesses with high international transactions, creating faster and more cost effective opportunities.
A ‘free’ account in this segment usually means free from monthly subscription fees rather than free everything. If you pick the wrong sort of account for your business, you could end up spending a lot in fee’s, which is actually true of any business account.
Charges to look out for are very similar to any business account, either no credit check or otherwise, and include:
- Cash deposits, often a percentage fee per deposit with a daily or monthly cap
- ATM withdrawals above a set number each month
- International or non-GBP card payments and outbound transfers
- Same-day or priority outbound payments such as CHAPS
For a service business that mostly invoices customers, those trade-offs are easy to live with. For a high-volume cash business they can quickly add up, so the only honest way to compare is to run a normal month’s activity against the published fee schedule.
What checks do no credit check business accounts still run?
Every UK authorised provider has to perform Customer Due Diligence under money laundering regulations. That means verifying the identity of the business owner or directors, identifying beneficial owners with more than 25% control, taking a record of business activity and checking sanctions and politically exposed persons lists. These checks are run regardless of credit profile.
Expect to provide ID for all directors and beneficial owners, proof of address, and information about what the business does, where its income comes from and where it goes. Sole traders are usually asked for personal ID and proof of self-employment such as a UTR. A majority of applications can be conducted fully online and open in under 3 days, if not, hours.
What happens when you want to later apply for an overdraft or loan?
This is the bit that should be considered carefully. A no credit check current account does not include credit facilities such as an overdraft or credit cards. A majority of no credit check accounts will not offer these at a later date due to the way they are regulated. However if the provider is able and offers directly or via a third party partnership any lending products, the credit decision will involve a full credit check. That hard search will be visible on your file and assessed against your full credit history.
If your file is fragile, the practical answer is to spend time building it up before applying for credit through any provider. Stable conduct on the no credit check account, paying suppliers on time and filing accounts on time at Companies House all feed into the picture lenders see when that hard check eventually happens.
Which business bank accounts do not run a credit check?
The no credit check segment of UK business banking is mainly served by electronic money institutions (EMIs) authorised by the FCA rather than by deposit-taking banks. Common features include in-app onboarding, faster decision times (often within hours), debit cards and integrations with accounting tools. The differences between providers tend to be in the fee structure and the ceiling on activity, so compare on:
- Total monthly cost based on how you actually use the account, including transactions, cash deposits and any international activity
- The transaction and cash-deposit caps and whether they suit your turnover
- Whether the provider can grow with the business, accounting software integrations, multi-user permissions and multi-currency features
- Whether there is a path to credit later, even if that involves a partner firm and a full credit check at the point of application
Are there any no credit check business bank accounts that are FSCS protected?
This is where the bank versus EMI distinction matters most. The Financial Services Compensation Scheme protects deposits at UK-authorised banks and building societies up to £120,000 per eligible depositor since the limit was raised on 1 December 2025. Most no credit check accounts are offered by EMIs rather than banks, and EMIs are not part of FSCS. Instead, they have to ringfence customer money under EMI safeguarding rules, which means customer funds are kept separate from the firm’s own money.
In practice, both protect customer money but they do so through different routes, with different timelines for getting funds back if the worst happens. A handful of UK authorised banks now offer business accounts with no hard credit search at application; these benefit from FSCS protection in the normal way. Check the provider’s status on the FCA Register before opening anything. No credit check business accounts are not designed for large deposits or savings, so move those funds somewhere it can work harder and be under protection designed for retained balances.
No credit check accounts and Making Tax Digital
If past credit issues are part of why you are looking at a no credit check account, the last thing you want on top of that is an HMRC late filing penalty. From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. MTD does not apply to limited companies, which file corporation tax separately. For those in scope, MTD requires keeping digital records and submitting quarterly income and expense summaries to HMRC through compatible software.
At the end of each tax year, a Final Declaration replaces the traditional Self Assessment tax return as the way to confirm your full-year figures, claim allowances and settle your tax position. The quarterly reporting threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and to £20,000 from April 2028.
Several no credit check accounts now connect directly to MTD compatible accounting software through secure links, which removes most of the manual work in keeping the digital records HMRC requires. Choosing an account with a native integration is one of the simplest ways to evidence that the business is being run professionally, which matters when you eventually apply for credit.
Which brands offer no credit check accounts?
Zempler Bank and Starling Bank hold full UK banking licences, meaning deposits are FSCS-protected up to £120,000. Both offer no hard credit check at application, with Zempler also unique in allowing eligible applicants to apply for an overdraft of up to £2,000 at the point of opening, making it the only provider on this page that combines no credit check access with a credit facility.
The remaining providers, Tide, Airwallex, Revolut, WorldFirst, Wallester, ANNA Money, Equals Money and Counting Up are FCA-authorised electronic money institutions. None run a hard credit check at application, accounts typically open within hours, and funds are ringfenced under EMI safeguarding rules rather than FSCS-protected. The differences between them comes down to the fee structure and compatibility to your business.
No Credit Check Business Bank Account FAQs
Can I open a business bank account with no credit check?
Yes, the no-credit-check segment is mainly EMIs authorised by the FCA, with a small number of banks now offering similar products. They do not run a hard credit search at application, but they will still run an identity and AML check.
Is guaranteed approval on a business bank account real?
No, UK providers must complete identity and money laundering checks under the Money Laundering Regulations 2017, and any application can fail those checks. Avoid providers that advertise guaranteed approval, it is not something they can lawfully promise.
Will applying for a business bank account hurt my credit score?
A no credit check account uses a soft search, which only you can see and which has no effect on the score. A mainstream account at a high street bank often runs a hard search, particularly when an overdraft is offered alongside, and that footprint stays on your file for around 12 months.
Can I get an overdraft on a no credit check business account?
Not at the application stage. If the provider offers an overdraft directly or through a partner, that decision will involve a full credit check, even if the original account did not.
