How to Compare Business Bank Accounts
Understand Your Requirements
How you do business will affect the type of account you need. How many transactions will you have each month? Do you need to pay in cash? Do you need a local branch?
Check Eligibility
Most providers have a range of business accounts to suit different types of businesses. Check the eligibility of each account to make sure if suited to your business.
Compare The Latest Deals
There are numerous offers and deals to attract new customers which can be compared with our handy tool above. Always consider the cost of the account once the free period ends.
Online tech that defines business bank accounts
Almost every UK business bank account now offers online business bank account access, but the term ‘online’ covers a wide range of account types. At one end sits a high street bank with a full app and a branch network. At the other sits an online-only provider where the app is the entire relationship. The right account depends on how you work, the services you’re looking for and your budget.
What does ‘online business bank account’ actually mean?
Online access is now standard across the UK market, so the label on its own says less than it used to. The major high street banks offer full app and browser-based account management alongside their branch networks. Fully licensed challenger banks operate entirely online but hold a banking licence from the Prudential Regulation Authority and the FCA. FCA-authorised electronic money institutions (EMIs) also operate entirely online but are not banks.
The label ‘online business bank account’ only indicates that you can manage the account through an app or a browser. What matters is the underlying licence, the services included and whether there is any physical or human fallback.
What are the advantages of managing your business account online?
Modern online business banking has reshaped day-to-day account management. The features that matter most across both traditional banks with strong apps and digital-first providers:
- Real-time visibility: With instant notifications, automatic categorisation and direct feeds into accounting software such as FreeAgent, Xero or QuickBooks
- Faster Payments and standing orders sent and received without leaving the app
- Account management from anywhere: With no branch visit needed for routine activity
- Faster onboarding at many digital providers (often 24 to 48 hours) without a hard credit search at application
- Lower or zero monthly fees at the digital-first end of the market, with costs that scale with use rather than via subscription
These features are available at both traditional and digital providers, although the strongest end of the digital experience often sits with online-only banks and EMIs, where the app is the product rather than an add-on to a branch operation.
What is an online-only business bank account?
Online-only is a subset of the online market and these are providers with no branch network, no in-person service and no physical fallback. The category includes fully licensed banks and FCA-authorised EMIs. Online-only accounts can be useful products and have driven much of the recent improvement in business banking. They come with specific considerations that do not apply to hybrid providers; the next section sets them out.
What are the potential cons of an online-only business bank account?
Four risks are worth understanding before you commit to an online-only provider.
- Account freezes
Automated identity and money-laundering checks can suspend an account while the provider conducts a review, which can lock up working capital at short notice. From 28 April 2026, providers must give at least 90 days written notice and a written explanation before closing an account, under The Payment Services and Payment Accounts (Contract Termination) (Amendment) Regulations 2025, with an exception for suspected financial crime. The rules do not apply to short-term freezes during checks, but a frozen account is still a frozen account, and the practical answer is to read the provider’s published terms on reviews and disputes before you open an account. If your account is frozen with no explanation, you are entitled to know why.
- FSCS protection and e-money institutions
Many online-only providers are EMIs rather than authorised banks, and EMIs are not part of FSCS. Following the FCA’s safeguarding overhaul that came into force on 7 May 2026, EMIs are subject to strengthened safeguarding controls, including tighter rules on how customer funds are held with clearing banks. The new regime gives stronger structural protection than before, although it is not equivalent to the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, which covers deposits at UK-authorised banks and building societies up to £120,000 per eligible depositor since the limit was raised on 1 December 2025. Businesses that want FSCS-backed deposit protection should look at fully authorised banks, including online-only ones such as Starling Bank and Monzo Business.
- Digital exclusion
For business owners who prefer face-to-face support, or who operate in areas with patchy connectivity, an online-only account can create practical barriers that a hybrid account does not. Knowing where you sit on that spectrum before you open an account avoids opening one that does not fit the way you want to work.
- IT outages and operational resilience
Online-only providers have no physical fallback if systems go down. An outage during a payroll run or a time-sensitive supplier payment can leave a business without an alternative access point. The FCA publishes operational resilience expectations for firms, which require regulated firms to identify important business services and set tolerances for disruption, but outages still happen across the industry. This is worth factoring in if your business has regular high-stakes payment windows.
What can an e-money institution not offer?
The main features missing from an EMI account, compared with an account at a UK-authorised bank:
- FSCS-backed deposit protection (replaced by FCA safeguarding under the new regime)
- Business loans and overdraft facilities are offered in the EMI’s own name
- Physical branch access
- Certain payment types, including CHAPS, at some providers
The picture is moving and some providers can offer access to lending products via third-party partners and EMIs continue to expand their feature set. Always check the current product terms on the provider’s site before you commit.
Should I keep a secondary online business bank account?
Some UK SMEs hold a secondary business account as an operational resilience measure. The reasoning is straightforward: if the primary provider has an outage, an account freeze under review or a system issue during payroll, a backup account at a different provider keeps payments moving. Several digital providers offer permanent free tiers, making a backup account a low-cost decision rather than an expensive one. Holding the backup at a different banking group, rather than two accounts under the same parent, gives you independence.
What if I want online access but also a branch option?
For business owners who want app-based day-to-day management with a physical fallback available, the high street banks are now competitive on the digital side as well. Our comparison table covers both types, so you can weigh cost against access.
Which is the best online business bank account?
There is no single best online business bank account, and the right choice depends on how your business runs, what you need day-to-day, and how much you want to pay for extra features.
Before you choose, check whether a provider is a fully licensed bank or an FCA authorised electronic money institution (EMI): banks are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which protects your money up to £120,000 if the bank fails, while EMIs safeguard your money separately under FCA rules rather than through the FSCS, though funds held at the underlying bank can still gain some protection if that bank fails.
HSBC, NatWest, RBS and the Co-operative Bank all offer online business accounts with branch access included, which could suit businesses that still want to pay in cash or speak to someone in person. Virgin Money and Cynergy Bank could suit businesses holding higher balances, since both pay interest on your balance. For international trade, Airwallex, Equals and WorldFirst focus on multi-currency accounts and low-cost transfers. Zempler Bank stands out for accessibility, as it opens accounts without a hard credit check, which won’t affect your personal credit score. Wallester suits businesses that issue lots of cards. ANNA Money and Countingup both bundle free bookkeeping and HMRC tax filing into their accounts, which could save sole traders and small businesses time at tax return season.
Online Business Bank Account FAQs
What happens if an online business bank account is frozen?
The provider will usually freeze the account while it runs an identity, money laundering or fraud review. If the review ends in closure, the rules from 28 April 2026 require at least 90 days written notice and a written explanation, except where the provider is acting on financial crime grounds. The fastest route to a resolution is to respond to every information request in full and in writing, and to escalate through the provider’s complaints process (and on to the Financial Ombudsman Service if needed) if you are not getting answers.
Are online business bank accounts FSCS-protected?
Accounts at UK-authorised banks are protected up to £120,000 per eligible depositor under FSCS, whether the bank operates online-only (such as Starling Bank or Monzo Business) or with branches. Accounts at electronic money institutions are not part of FSCS but are protected by FCA safeguarding rules, which require customer money to be kept separate from the firm’s own money and held with clearing banks under the new safeguarding regime.
What is the difference between a digital bank and an e-money institution?
A digital bank holds a banking licence from the Prudential Regulation Authority and the FCA, can take deposits, can lend in its own name and is covered by FSCS. An e-money institution is authorised by the FCA to issue electronic money but cannot take deposits or lend in the same way, and is covered by safeguarding rather than FSCS. Both can be entirely online; the difference is the licence behind the account.
Can I get a business loan through an online business bank account?
Yes, with caveats. Online banks offer overdrafts, loans and other credit products in their own right, subject to the same credit checks as any other bank. EMIs do not lend directly, although some offer access to lending products through third-party partners. The credit decision will involve a hard credit search either way.
Do I need an online-only account, or can I bank online with a high street bank?
Online-only is a choice, not a requirement. Every major UK bank now offers full online and app-based account management, so you can have the digital experience without giving up branch access. The decision usually comes down to monthly cost, the depth of the app, and whether you need or want the option to speak to someone in person.
