This differentiates them from providers offering local account details for the EU (SEPA) only and currency accounts or ‘pots’ that transact only via SWIFT.

How to Compare Business Bank Accounts

1

Understand Your Requirements

How you do business will affect the type of account you need. How many transactions will you have each month? Do you need to pay in cash? Do you need a local branch?

2

Check Eligibility

Most providers have a range of business accounts to suit different types of businesses. Check the eligibility of each account to make sure if suited to your business.

3

Compare The Latest Deals

There are numerous offers and deals to attract new customers which can be compared with our handy tool above. Always consider the cost of the account once the free period ends.

Business bank accounts with branch access

For all the convenience of app based banking, there are situations where being able to walk into a branch matters. A complex transaction that needs explaining. A document that needs certifying. A problem that’s easier to resolve face to face. Or simply the reassurance of speaking to someone who knows your business.

We have looked at business bank accounts where the provider maintains a nationwide branch network, giving you access to in person support when you need it.

Who offers branch access?

In the current business banking market, branch access is largely the territory of the established high street banks. Providers like Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, and Santander maintain physical branch networks across the UK. These are fully authorised banks, subject to full FCA regulation and covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which protects eligible deposits up to £120,000.

Most newer, digital-first business account providers, including the majority of EMIs, do not have branch networks. Their model is built around remote access via apps and online platforms. If branch access is important to you, your options are predominantly the traditional banks, but make sure you don’t confuse branch access with cash deposits. Cash deposits are offered by many account providers via partnerships, such as The Post Office.

What branch access actually means in practice

Branch access isn’t uniform across providers. The experience and range of services available in a branch can vary:

  • Counter services: paying in cash or cheques, making payments, and basic account queries are available at most branches.
  • Relationship management: Some traditional banks assign a dedicated business relationship manager to accounts above a certain size or turnover. This is more common for established businesses than startups.
  • Document services: branches can often assist with certified documents, mandates, and paperwork that can’t easily be handled online.
  • Self-service machines: many branches have reduced counter staff over recent years and rely more heavily on self-service machines for routine tasks like cash and cheque deposits.

It’s also worth noting that branch networks have reduced significantly over the past decade. While the larger banks still maintain a nationwide presence, ‘nationwide’ doesn’t mean every town has a branch. If geographic convenience is a factor, check whether there’s a branch near you before making it a key reason to choose a provider.

Branch access vs. digital convenience: a real trade off

Traditional banks with branch networks tend to offer a broader product range: current accounts, savings, mortgages, pensions, overdrafts, loans, and relationship banking. But they also often come with more complex fee structures, longer account opening times, and more stringent application processes compared to digital alternatives.

App-based providers are typically faster to open, simpler to manage day-to-day, and often cheaper for businesses with straightforward banking needs. The trade off is limited or no in-person support and a more niche product range based on a particular business focus.

Neither is universally better. The right choice depends on what you actually need from your business banking, and how often you’re likely to rely on in-person services.

When branch access genuinely matters

For many businesses, branch access rarely becomes critical. For others, it’s a regular part of how they operate. It tends to matter most when:

  • Your business handles regular cash deposits and relies on branch counter services.
  • You’re managing a more complex business with multiple directors, employees, or a higher volume of financial activity.
  • You’d benefit from a dedicated relationship manager, whether for advice, credit facilities, or ongoing support.
  • You deal with situations that are harder to resolve remotely, like fraud queries, account disputes, or complex payment arrangements.

If none of these applies to your business regularly, branch access may be a nice to have rather than a genuine requirement, and it may not be worth paying extra for it or accepting other limitations in exchange.

Business bank accounts with branch access FAQs

1. Do I need a business bank account with branch access?

It depends on how you operate. If you regularly need in-person support, or want a relationship manager, branch access is worth prioritising. If your banking is mostly digital (card payments, online transfers, app-based management), you may never need to visit a branch, and a digital first account may suit you better.

2. Are branch based business bank accounts more expensive?

High street banks with branch networks typically have more complex fee structures but whether it makes it more expensive for your business over a different provider can only be determined by you.  It’s worth comparing the full cost across your expected account activity before deciding.

3. Is my money safer with a traditional bank than a digital provider?

Both types of provider are regulated by the FCA. Traditional banks and digital banks with a full banking licence offer FSCS protection up to £120,000. Electronic money institutions (EMIs), which make up many of the digital-first providers, instead safeguard funds in a separate ring fenced account. This protects if the provider fails, but it’s a different mechanism from FSCS.

4. Can I open a business account online with a branch based account?

Most high street banks now offer online or in-app applications for business accounts. However, the process tends to be more involved than with digital only providers: more documentation, longer processing times, and in some cases, an in-branch appointment may be required. Account opening often  takes longer than the three days associated with fast opening digital accounts.

5. What is a business relationship manager, and will I get one?

A relationship manager is a dedicated point of contact at your bank who gets to know your business and can assist with more complex queries, lending decisions, or account management. Not all business customers are assigned one. They tend to be offered to businesses above a certain size or transaction volume. If having a relationship manager matters to you, check whether your chosen provider offers this as part of the account tier you’re looking at.
