Managing exchange rates with a multi-currency account

Holding, receiving and sending money in multiple currencies is a straightforward operational need for many UK businesses, but finding an account that handles it efficiently for your exact business needs can be tricky. We look at how multi-currency accounts work, what the fee structures look like and what to ask before you apply.

What is a multi-currency business account?

A multi-currency business account allows you to hold balances in more than one currency within the same account structure and convert between them at a time of your choosing. Rather than converting every incoming foreign currency payment to sterling automatically, you can accumulate balances in USD, EUR or other supported currencies and convert when the exchange rate is favourable, or simply hold the balance to pay future costs in the same currency.

This is a more specialist product than a standard business bank account with international payment capability. The distinguishing feature is the ability to hold currency balances and manage conversion timing, not simply to send or receive international payments.

Who needs a multi-currency business account?

Multi-currency accounts are most relevant for businesses where a significant proportion of income or costs is denominated in foreign currency on a recurring basis:

  • Exporters and importers who regularly invoice or are invoiced in non-sterling currencies, and who want to avoid converting back and forth on each transaction while waiting for a more favourable rate.
  • E-commerce businesses selling internationally across multiple markets, where revenue arrives in the local currency of each market and frequent automatic conversion would eat into margins.
  • Businesses with overseas subsidiaries, suppliers or payroll, where holding a currency balance allows expenses to be paid directly without conversion.
  • Businesses that want to hold foreign currency balances as a deliberate hedge against exchange rate movement, accepting some risk in one direction in return for potential benefit if rates move in their favour.

How do I open a multi-currency account?

Most applications are online and follow the same broad steps:

  • Check the provider supports the currencies you actually trade in before you start, not after.
  • You’ll then need your Companies House registration number, photo ID and proof of address for directors and anyone owning 25% or more of the business, plus a description of what your business does and where your payments come from.
  • Providers likely will ask about expected volumes and destination countries because they must understand cross-border flows, so specific answers speed things up.
  • Once approved, you activate the currency balances you need and share the local account details with your overseas customers.

Why is pricing for multi-currency accounts hard to compare?

Some multi-currency account providers do not publish a standard rate structure. Instead, pricing is tailored to your business and disclosed after an application review, including verification of your trading history, turnover and the currencies you need. This tends to be the case for larger businesses, or those with high transaction volumes. However, there are accounts that sit with standardised fees that can help you work out what your costs might be before committing to an application.

What fees should you consider before opening a multi-currency account?

  • Monthly or annual account fee: Some providers charge a flat fee regardless of activity; others charge per account or per currency held. Establish the baseline cost before you assess the transaction pricing.
  • FX margin on core currencies: For your most frequently used currency pairs (typically GBP/EUR and GBP/USD), ask for the specific margin applied to conversions. This is the difference between the mid-market rate and the rate you receive and it is often the highest single cost in multi-currency banking.
  • Transaction fees for international payments: In addition to the FX margin, some providers charge a fixed fee per outbound international payment. Ask whether this applies to all currencies or only to SWIFT-routed payments.
  • Receiving fees: Some providers charge a fee when you receive an international payment into your currency account. This is frequently not mentioned unless you ask.
  • Fees for unsupported or non-core currencies: Ask specifically what happens when you need to transact in a currency outside the provider’s core supported list.

Free transactions on multi-currency accounts

Most multi-currency accounts market their core currency corridors, commonly USD, EUR and GBP, as free or low-cost to transact in. This is often accurate for those specific pairs. The catch is that transactions in currencies outside the core supported list typically incur fees that are not prominently disclosed.

These charges for less commonly supported currencies can be 1.5% or more per transaction. For businesses with global operations that occasionally transact in emerging-market or smaller-economy currencies, this can represent a high and unexpected cost.

It is also worth understanding the distinction between a currency account and a local rails account in this context. A currency account lets you hold a balance in a foreign currency. A local rails account gives you actual in-country account details for a specific currency, such as an IBAN for euros or a routing number for US dollars, allowing your counterparties to pay you as a domestic transfer rather than an international wire. Local rails significantly reduce the cost and complexity of receiving payments in those currencies.

Among UK providers, local rails for euro payments via SEPA are the most widely available. A smaller number offer expanded local rails for additional currencies, including USD via ACH. For our comparison tables, accounts are categorised as offering global currency account functionality where they provide SEPA local rails plus at least one additional local rail currency.

Is a multi-currency business account FSCS-protected?

For most specialist multi-currency providers, the answer is no, and this is a meaningful distinction for businesses holding significant foreign currency balances.

Most specialist multi-currency account providers are e-money institutions rather than full banks. They are not covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS), which protects eligible deposits up to £120,000 per eligible depositor at authorised banks.

Instead, e-money institutions (EMIs) are required to hold client funds in safeguarded accounts that are kept separate from the institution’s own money. If the provider fails, your funds can be identified and returned. This is genuine protection, but it operates differently from FSCS cover: it does not carry a government guarantee, and the process of recovering funds in a failure scenario is more complex.

For businesses holding large currency balances, the nature of the protection arrangement should be a factor in provider selection, not an afterthought.

Multi-currency account vs traditional bank with international payments: which is better?

The honest answer is that they serve different needs, and many businesses that require genuine multi-currency functionality use a specialist provider alongside, rather than instead of, a traditional banking relationship.

A traditional UK bank with international payment capabilities offers FSCS-protected deposits, access to credit, business loans, and overdraft facilities, and an established regulatory framework. Its international payment costs will generally be higher, its FX margins wider, and its multi-currency account functionality more limited than those of a specialist provider.

A specialist multi-currency provider offers better currency-holding functionality, more competitive FX pricing on core corridors, stronger platform integration, and more flexible account structures. It is generally not a substitute for a credit relationship or for domestic banking infrastructure.

The right balance depends on your payment volumes, the range of currencies you work in and how much of your working capital you are comfortable holding outside an FSCS-protected account.

Which multi-currency accounts are worth considering?

The strongest accounts make it easy to see what you’ll pay. Look out for providers that publish their pricing upfront or give you a clear quote before you apply, offer local payment details in the currencies you use most and are open about costs on less common currencies.

Our comparison table sets out supported currencies, local account details, protection status and fee transparency for each provider, so you can weigh up your options at a glance.

Multi Currency Business Bank Account FAQs

How do multi-currency accounts work?

A multi-currency account lets you hold, send and receive money in several currencies from one account, without converting everything back to pounds. When a customer pays you in euros or dollars, the money sits in that currency until you choose to convert it. That means you can time conversions rather than accept whatever rate applies on the day the payment lands. Most providers give you local account details, such as a European IBAN or US account and routing numbers. Customers can then pay you as if you were a local business, which avoids international receiving fees and you manage every balance through one platform.

How do I compare multi-currency account fees?

Compare each provider specifically for: the FX margin on your core currency pairs, fixed transaction fees, receiving fees, monthly or annual account costs and the fees that apply to any currencies outside their core supported list.

Do multi-currency accounts charge for all currencies?

Core currency transactions, most commonly USD, EUR and GBP, are often marketed as free or low-cost. Transactions in currencies outside a provider’s core supported list typically attract additional fees, sometimes 1.5% or more per transaction. Before opening an account, establish exactly which currencies are included in any free transaction arrangement and what applies to the others you need.

How fast can I open a multi-currency account?

It depends on the provider type you choose; digital specialists and e-money institutions can often open accounts within a day or two, sometimes within hours, because onboarding is fully online. Licensed banks typically take longer, from a few days to several weeks, because they run fuller credit and compliance checks. Whichever you choose, expect checks on directors and anyone owning 25% or more of the business. Complex ownership structures or overseas shareholders can slow down the application, so have all your documents ready before you apply.
