How to Compare Business Bank Accounts
Understand Your Requirements
How you do business will affect the type of account you need. How many transactions will you have each month? Do you need to pay in cash? Do you need a local branch?
Check Eligibility
Most providers have a range of business accounts to suit different types of businesses. Check the eligibility of each account to make sure if suited to your business.
Compare The Latest Deals
There are numerous offers and deals to attract new customers which can be compared with our handy tool above. Always consider the cost of the account once the free period ends.
Businesses that need cash handling services with their bank account
Cash deposit business accounts simply allow you to make cash deposits for your business. So, if your business takes cash, the account you choose has to answer one question first: where can you actually pay it in, and what does each deposit cost you? Every business account charges for cash in some form, whether it comes from a high street bank or a digital provider. This page sets out the available routes, the real fees and limits by provider and what to do when your nearest deposit point closes.
Compare business bank accounts for cash deposits
Where can businesses deposit cash now?
There are four practical routes for paying cash into a UK business account, and many businesses use more than one:
- Branch counters remain the highest limit option, particularly for coin and large weekly takings. However, the network has shrunk by roughly 6,900 sites since the start of 2015, with another 314 closures in 2026 scheduled.
- Post Office counters are now the backbone of business cash deposits in the UK. Around 11,500 branches offer banking under the Banking Framework agreement, which runs to December 2030 and covers 30 banks and building societies. Your own bank sets the fees and limits, not the Post Office.
- PayPoint sits in more than 30,000 shops, which is more outlets than all the banks, Post Offices and supermarkets combined. It handles smaller amounts and is designed for topping up rather than banking a full week of larger size takings.
- Banking hubs are shared counters run by Post Office staff for participating banks, and they offer 237 and 140 deposit services. The hubs handle deposits, withdrawals, cheques and change for registered businesses, with community bankers attending on rota days.
| Route | Sites in the UK | Could be best for |
|---|---|---|
| Bank branches | 4000+ | Large deposits, coin, complex issues |
| Post Office | About 11,700 | Regular takings, notes and coin |
| PayPoint | More than 30,000 | Small, frequent top-ups |
| Banking hubs | 237 open | Areas where the last branch has gone |
Septemeber 2026
Can digital providers take cash deposits?
Some can and some cannot, and the answer has nothing to do with whether the provider calls itself a bank. What matters is whether it has an arrangement with a third-party network, because an online business bank account comes with no counters of its own.
| Provider | Takes cash? | Through which network |
|---|---|---|
| Starling | Yes | Post Office |
| Monzo | Yes | PayPoint and Post Office |
| Zempler | Yes | Post Office only |
| Tide | Yes | Post Office and PayPoint |
| ANNA | Yes | PayPoint only |
| Revolut | No | Currently no retail cash route |
| Airwallex | No | Currently no retail cash route |
| Wise | No | Currently no retail cash route |
Check this before you open anything. A provider that suits your business in every other respect may have no way of accepting your takings at all.
What does depositing cash really cost?
Every business account has a cash-deposit charging structure, and that applies to high street banks and digital providers alike. That includes accounts advertised as free, since free business bank accounts waive the monthly fee rather than the deposit charge. What differs is how the charge is expressed, whether a free allowance applies first and which channel you use.
| Provider | Charge | Cost of a £1,000 deposit |
|---|---|---|
| Monzo | £1 flat per deposit (standard free account. Free allowances on paid versions) | £1.00 |
| Metro Bank (new business account) | Free within £10,000 a month | £0.00 |
| Tide (paid plan, Post Office) | £2.50 flat up to £500, then 0.5% (paid plans) | £5.00 |
| Zempler (Post Office) | 0.55%, minimum £4 | £5.50 |
| Starling (Post Office) | 0.7%, minimum £3 | £7.00 |
| Lloyds (deposit machine) | £0.85 per £100 | £8.50 |
| NatWest (counter or Post Office) | £0.95 per £100 | £9.50 |
| Santander (counter or Post Office) | £1.25 per £100 | £12.50 |
| HSBC (counter or Post Office) | 1.5% plus £1.50 per credit | £16.50 |
This information is provided as guidance, not advice or recommendation. Fees were taken from provider websites in September 2026. Fees vary between ‘free’ and ‘paid’ accounts, from one provider and change regularly. Always check before proceeding.
How much cash can you deposit into a business account?
Your provider sets limits rather than the counter you use, and they vary far more widely than fees do. Several providers also set a lower ceiling for sole traders than for limited companies, which is worth checking against your takings if you are comparing sole trader business bank accounts.
Individual counters apply their own ceilings on top of these, so a small branch may refuse a deposit your account allows. If you regularly bank more than £2,000 at a time, call ahead or agree a routine with a larger site.
How to deposit cash into a business bank account
- At a branch counter, take your card or a paying-in slip with the cash, and expect questions related to the source of unusually large amounts.
- At a Post Office, pay in with your business debit card and PIN, or with a paying-in slip if your bank still issues them. Notes and coins are both accepted, though coin handling varies by branch.
- At PayPoint, you generate a barcode in your provider’s app and the retailer scans it.
- At a banking hub, the process matches the Post Office because the same staff run the counter. Hubs also give change to registered businesses.
At most counters, someone else can pay in on your behalf, provided they have the card or slip and the deposit stays within your account limits.
A quick note on your own money worth remembering. Personal funds paid into a limited company are either classed as a director’s loan, which the company can repay you, or capital introduced. Either way, you need to record it properly in your accounts rather than treating it as takings.
What happens when your branch closes?
If you regularly pay cash into your business account, you may want to consider the steps to take if your branch were to close locally, to ensure you can keep making deposits.
The FCA’s Access to Cash rules have been in force since September 2024. They require 14 designated banks and building societies to assess the impact on cash access whenever a branch or facility closes. Those assessments must cover deposits and withdrawals and they must consider business customers, not just personal ones. Firms have 12 weeks to inform customers of any changes.
You can trigger an assessment yourself. Any business, individual or local organisation can submit a cash access request to LINK for their area, and communities have 28 days to challenge the outcome. If your nearest deposit point has gone and nothing has replaced it, that request costs nothing but the time to fill it in.
As detailed above, many locations have Post Office, PayPoints, or banking hubs that could support your payments if your branch closes.
If your deposit route isn’t available in your area, consider switching to a business bank account.
Should you be taking less cash in the first place?
This depends on the type of business you run and how likely you are to receive cash payments. However, overall trends show cash payments are declining. According to UK Finance’s 2026 report, cash payments accounted for roughly 8% of UK payments in 2025, a reduction of 45% compared to a decade earlier.
The sensible response may be to accept cash but reduce how much of your takings arrives that way. Card readers cost very little to run and payment links, invoicing and bank transfers all move money without anyone visiting a counter. There are fees attached to most ways you receive money into your account, but cash deposit services are expensive to run, and this gets fed back into the running costs of your account. Working out if payments received electronically versus cash is going to save you time and money is a good review to conduct.
Some businesses genuinely need a strong cash proposition and those should choose on deposit economics rather than headline monthly fee. For everyone else, it is worth checking how much of your income really has to be cash before you build your banking around it.
Is your money protected once it is banked?
Deposit protection is a separate question from how you pay cash in, and it is worth treating separately because the answer depends on the institution rather than the counter.
Money held with a bank or building society is covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. The limit is £120,000 per depositor per authorised firm. A limited company qualifies in its own right. A sole trader gets one combined limit across personal and business money at the same institution.
Money held with an e-money institution works differently so the FSCS does not apply. The firm must instead safeguard customer funds, either by holding them separately at an authorised bank or by covering them with insurance. If the firm fails, safeguarded money sits outside its estate and is returned to customers ahead of other creditors, with no cap on the amount. New FCA safeguarding rules took effect on 7 May 2026 and tightened record-keeping, reconciliation and audit requirements for these firms.
If you hold big balances rather than clearing them daily, check this alongside what interest the account pays. The provider that costs least to deposit cash isn’t automatically the right home for your reserves, and nothing stops you from separating the two and in fact most business accounts designed for day to day banking, are not the best place to hold reserves.
How to choose a cash-friendly business account
Here are some key things to consider when you choose a cash deposit bank account:
- What happens when something goes wrong, and whether you can speak to a person or customer service team to get support
- Cost per £1,000 deposited, multiplied by your actual monthly takings, which is where comparing business bank accounts can be helpful
- Distance to the nearest counter that accepts your provider, not just the nearest bank

Frequently asked questions
How much cash can you deposit into a business bank account?
There is no single UK limit, because each provider sets its own. Individual counters may cap deposits below your account limit. If you regularly exceed your allowance, ask your provider to review it rather than splitting deposits across days.
Do banks notify HMRC of large cash deposits?
No fixed amount triggers questions as UK reporting is based on a number of factors, rather than size. Concerns are reported to the National Crime Agency rather than HMRC. It’s more about deposits that are consistent with your usual takings, and this may mean they fluctuate. For example, seasonal businesses can be affected by large changes in income. Keep records for any deposits made, keeping extra information for income that looks different to your usual business.
Is depositing £5,000 in cash suspicious?
Not in itself; banks monitor whether activity matches what they expect from your business rather than watching for a particular figure. A pub banking £5,000 after a bank holiday is ordinary. The same deposit from a business with no cash-taking history might raise questions.
Do businesses get charged for depositing cash?
Yes, in almost every case. Handling, transporting and counting notes and coins costs money, and business tariffs pass that on as a percentage or a charge per £100. Some accounts include a free monthly allowance first, which is where providers differ most.
Can you deposit personal money into a business account?
Yes, but it needs to be recorded correctly. In a limited company, it is either a director’s loan, which the company can repay you, or capital introduced. Sole traders can move money in freely, but should still record it so it is not mistaken for takings.
Can digital banks take cash deposits?
Some can, some can’t. Those that do accept cash handle it through third-party counters, such as Post Office branches or retail pay-in networks, rather than on their own premises and a few use more than one network. Others take no cash at all, so it is worth checking to see what they offer before opening an account.
What is a banking hub and can my business use one?
A banking hub is a shared counter staffed by Post Office employees, serving customers of participating banks in areas that have lost their branches. There are 237 open across the UK. Registered businesses can deposit and withdraw cash, pay in cheques and get change. Community bankers from individual banks attend on set days for account queries.
